The Veterans

The Veterans Monument

Sponsor: Disabled American Veterans (DAV)

Sierra Vista citizens have served their country over many years dating back to the 1870s. Starting from the Indian conflicts through World War I, World War II, Korean War, Viet Nam War, Persian Gulf War and the Afghanistan War, service of these citizens was remarkable. It is fitting that we recognize their bravery and dedicated service.

Theme: The Veteran Warriors

The Veterans make up a key element of the populace in Sierra Vista as evidenced by the name of the main park: Veterans Memorial Park. Veterans form the backbone of Veteran Service Organizations (VSO) who support their comrades after they have fulfilled their duty to country, often a great personal sacrifice.

Background information: The scale and scope of Veterans service can be given dimensions of time going back to the 1870s, and a diversity of military functions including the Cavalry, Intelligence, and Signal stationed at Fort Huachuca. The human dimension includes Cavalry regiments identified as the Buffalo Soldiers, the all-black fighting elements employed during the Indian Wars in the Southwest. Women also were uniquely employed and deployed in roles that have matured throughout our history. The involvement of all the Military service departments of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force in training activities at Fort Huachuca, especially for Intelligence disciplines, has placed many Veterans of various backgrounds and experiences into this common area up to this current day. Many of them continue to serve their fellow Veterans in many service organizations dedicated to the support of Veterans. Their contributions to improved morale, social and medical assistance, and especially to obtaining benefits are a testament to their commitment to our nation and our fellow Veterans.
